Officer Local Goes to VCAT - Alliance for Gambling Reform

Stand with Andrew

On the 9th of February, local Officer resident, Andrew, is going to VCAT to defends his community's right to have their voice heard.

The Shire of Cardinia already has 325 poker machines and the community loses over $27 million from poker machines every year. That’s the equivalent to $376 per adult in Cardinia. We already know the harms that pokies can cause to a community, including increased mental health issues, crime and domestic violence.

Officer doesn’t need 80 additional machines. They will be extremely harmful to this community. Stand with Andrew as he fights for this communities right to be heard.

Usually, Victorian Hotels must apply for planning permits through their local council. The local council then alert the community, and community members have third party appeal rights to oppose the application. Community input is crucial in the decisions for poker machines and plays a large role in the final decision. When communities are at the forefront of pokies applications they play a role in seeing a result that is best for the community. The Shire of Cardinia have not been given the opportunity to oppose the licensing matter for this application, and we've had enough!
