Ban Cash Withdrawals: Limit Pokie Harm

Dear Chief Minister Andrew Barr,

A strong and growing body of research supports the effectiveness of restrictions on access to cash by gamblers while they are gambling as a harm minimisation measure. To put it simply, by limiting at-risk or problem gamblers' access to cash, overspending becomes less likely.

As of 2014-2015, ACT citizens were losing $167 million in poker machines. That's money that could've been spent in the community. This measure will still allow punters to enjoy food and drinks at their local clubs whilst taking serious steps to limit the potential for pokie harm.

I support the banning of cash withdrawals from EFTPOS machines within clubs. Clubs should be brought into line with the casino to stop people from withdrawing money via eftpos. I support your leadership to protect our community from the increased potential for pokie harm.

The ACT government is currently considering banning ATM cash withdrawals from clubs.

According to Justice and Community Safety Directorate officials, "There is a strong and growing body of research that supports the effectiveness of restrictions on access to cash by gamblers while they are gambling as a harm minimisation measure,". "By limiting at-risk or problem gamblers' access to cash, overspending becomes less likely."

This is a crucial step forward in limiting the potential harm pokies can cause whilst also not impacting punters being able to enjoy food and drinks at their clubs. Sign the petition to show the ACT government that the community supports their leadership- we want to see action!
