We Don't Want More Pokies in Berwick

Dear Mr Wilson,

Zagame's Berwick Springs Hotel is the 10th highest pokies spending venue in the state, the highest in Casey and they’re on track to make $18 million (in 2016/17) with the machines that they’ve got. The hotel plans to expand their 95 pokies to 105 and we cannot allow this.

The City of Casey is ranked second in Victoria in poker machine losses; residents lost almost $125 million last financial year.  That's money that could have been spent in our local community to develop it further. Poker machines hurt people; there is a proven link between poker machines and family violence, depression, divorce and crime. Pokie-related harm is a problem that needs to be taken seriously and the community needs protection from further exposure to poker machines.

I ask that you do not allow the additional ten poker machines and take a stand to protect the community.

Zagame’s Berwick Springs Hotel currently owns 95 poker machine and is the top earner in Casey as well as being the 10th biggest earning hotel in the entire state of Victoria. However, they are currently applying to add 10 more poker machines, bringing their capacity up to the state limit of 105 per venue.

The City of Casey is ranked second in Victoria in poker machine losses; residents lost almost $125 million last financial year, second only to Brimbank. It is a relatively disadvantaged area, ranked 9th out of 31 metropolitan local government areas (LGAs) in the SEIFA socio-economic index. It is a growth area, which means young families, and Casey is home to some of the highest levels of mortgage stress in the country. Unemployment is high, sitting at around 8%, and Casey has more unemployed adults than any other metropolitan LGA.

Considering that Casey’s 13 existing poker machine venues already operate over 900 poker machines, we can't add anymore! Sign the petition to demand Council does not allow for the expansion of Zagame's pokies.
