Woolworths: The Pokies People

To the Woolworths Board of Directors,

Pokies are now on trial with Shonica Guy taking Crown and Aristocrat to the Federal Court arguing their machines are misleading and deceptive.

At the same time, Woolies is generating 11.7% of its annual profit from its pokie business. You have 13,000 pokies across 330 venues all around Australia and many of them could be found to be unlawful under the Australian Consumer Law.

The community loses more than $12 billion to pokies every year. They're designed to addict and contribute to poverty, mental health issues and family violence.

Are you the Fresh Food People or the Pokies People?

You cannot be a family-friendly business whilst reaping huge profits from a product that is devastating Australian families every day.

Show some leadership, and announce at your AGM that your getting out of the pokies business. They're misleading, deceptive and harming our communities.

Woolworths is the biggest operator of pokies, the most damaging type of gambling, making an outrageous $2.4 billion out of its pokies business over the past 12 years. On average, that's $200 million a year!

Shonica has put pokies on trial, arguing they are a misleading and deceptive product and arguing that  their pokies are unlawful under the Australian Consumer Law. At the same time, Woolies is generating 11.7% of its annual profit from its pokie business. They have 13,000 pokies across 330 venues all around Australia: 85 pokies venues in Victoria, 49 in NSW, 29 in South Australia and 122 in Queensland.

We know it and they know it. Pokies are harming communities across Australia and Woolies is profiting from this!

It's time for them to get out of the pokies business.
