Residents of the Inner West lose close to $400,000 to poker machines every single day!
A number of actions have been proposed that the Inner West Council could adopt to minimize the harm from gambling. These include:
- Calling on the state government to cap numbers (already over 2000 machines);
- Council adopting a policy of moving to reduce and eventually remove all poker machines from premises on public land;
- Council not taking sponsorship from gambling companies on public assets such as ovals;
- Venues currently making profits from poker machines contribute locally to the employment of Gambling Harm Management officers at Council who can help educate residents about counselling services and the dangers of gambling.
85% of harm in a community is experienced by people who are not labelled as “problem gamblers”. Council is asked to take a public health approach to this issue – you can encourage them to do that!
All you need to do is to add your name, address, email address and hit send to push the Council into adopting a much-needed gambling harm policy!
